SMOG CHECK ADVISORY - PLACEMENT OF DYNOS
Existing regulations and BAR-97 specifications provide guidance on the placement of Dynos used for smog inspection.
- Vehicle testing must be in a building large enough to accommodate the type of vehicles being serviced.
- The bureau must approve the work area during licensing inspection.
- Equipment may only be used within a building
- Equipment shall not be used in an environment that would subject the analyzer to excessive heat, cold, dust or moisture.
- Vehicles must be tested at near level ( + or - 5 degrees) while on the dynamometer.
- Dynamometer may be installed in-floor or above ground, as long as the vehicle is level during testing.
BAR recommends the following:
- Dynos should be level in ALL directions and securely mounted to the floor.
- Dynos and controllers must be protected from the environment. At a minimum the building housing the dyno must be weather tight with the closest part of the dyno at least five feet from any weather tight exterior door (10 ft. or lower). For each additional foot of door height, BAR recommends an additional 6 inches distance between the dyno and the door.
- For non-weather tight doors BAR recommends a minimum distance of 10 feet between the door and the nearest part of the dyno.
- Compliance with all state and local requirements.
In addition to the above, consider the following in placing your dyno:
- The equipment warranty may be voided if the dyno becomes damaged due to excessive heat, cold, dust or moisture.
- UL approval is for indoor use only.
- Local conditional use permits require service bays be long enough to repair a vehicle inside the building with the door closed.
